1902 – 1982 Marshall Professor of French Language and Literature from 1937 until 1966. Born in St Andrews, Boase graduated from New College, Oxford and undertook post-doctoral research at Trinity College, Cambridge and the Sorbonne. He was a lecturer in French at the University of Sheffield from 1929 until his appointment to the Chair of French at the University College of Southampton in 1936. He came to Glasgow the following year and, under his leadership, the Department of French Language and Literature became one of Britain's largest and most dynamic.
